Virtually every financial writer will pen an article selecting his or her top picks for the upcoming year. I enjoy reading them and the logic behind them. The declines were similar for all four – with WOOD + SPY posting identical losses of 38.4% while lumber declined 40.3% and CUT fared the worst with a 51.6% decline. However, WOOD has only been trading since late June, so there is less than six full months of data to analyze.

The price of lumber has declined the least of all four with a YTD loss of about 33% versus a 46.8% loss for WOOD, a 57.7% loss for CUT, and a loss of 42.8% for SPY. Over the past 12 years, near-month CME Lumber Futures have traded within a range of about $200-$450, which places the current price at key support levels.

Jeremy Grantham Was Right: World O’Bubbles Pops
