Contrarian Trader Shops for Sears, Williams-Sonoma

Filed under: Newsletters, Stocks to Buy In very contrarian fashion, Bernie Schaeffer has used the market pullback to initiate two positions in retail stocks.
The editor of Schaeffer's Research -- who uses a combination of technical, fundamental and sentiment-based metrics to select his trading positions -- has bought shares of Sears Holdings (SHLD) and Williams-Sonoma (WSM). Schaeffer explains, "I initiated a long position in Sears Holdings. Price action for SHLD has been strong, with the equity up 13 percent year-to-date and 75 percent in the past 52 weeks. <><>Continue reading <>Contrarian Trader S>>>...

Analysts have a hold or market perform rating on the stock, but that is meaningless to me. What does have meaning is 20% sales growth in a dismal year, contributing to a PEG ratio of .75 and an under market P/E of 12.66 (averaging trailing and future figures).
These are very good numbers, however, in reviewing some of the data points wit...

not a RE play anymore, do you like the stores?

Sears now loses cash, as of the last two quarters. It must spend to revitalize stores in an environment of consumer tightening. Meanwhile the competition with Wal-mart, Costco, and Amazon continues. But the real reason to not own Sears is commercial RE. Once the reason why many bulls in recent years cited Sears as a great value play, it is quite possible that the value of the CRE neath Sears stores is actually worth nothing. Think about it. Even the best retailers will have to shut down stores and shrink during a consumer depression. thus their CRE holdings are less than everyone ...

You bet they do. Despite being charged to act in the best interest of shareholders, those running publicly traded companies will often go to extremes to convince the market of value that may or may not be there. <>We all remember the stories of the accounting games that were used to feed the Wall Street beat-the-estimate game. IMHO, as of 6:20 am 9/8/2008, by the valuation numbers only, relative to its industry, SHLD is overvalued: SHLD's projected P/E is 47.2x while its industry (Department Stores) is averaging a projected P/E of 21.0x, implying a projected stock price of $40.40. SHLD's projected earnings growth rate is 12.33% and its PEG is 3.83 while the industry average PEG is 1.82, implying a projected stock price of $43.09. Here are the analysis details: http://www.freestockvalueranker.com/?under_over=-1&method... Why is this stock so overvalued?

While Street Yells 'Sell!' Lampert Buys Back 4% of Sears

The results for Sears’ (SHLD) second fiscal quarter are now out and, for most people, they are not very pretty. Year over year sales declines, net income down, lowered guidance. These things are, in essence, death to any retailer, or any publicly traded corporation for that matter. Here are some headlines I read this morning:

When management with a reputation for brilliance tackles a business with a reputation for poor fundamental economics, it's the reputation of the business that remains intact. - Warren Buffett Eddie Lampert has a simple strategy when it comes to investing: Buy a large portion of stock in a particular company in which he can influence the management, cut expenses at the company and use the money to buy back stocks. He has been successful so far. Autozone (AZO) is a great example.

With its market price declining daily, giving me the opportunity to pick up even more shares, I thought I’d present a very rough look at how the market is valuing Sears Holdings (SHLD) right now, putting reasonable numbers to a rather abstract investment idea. <>Reality check number 1: In normal times, Sears is generating a good $50 billion in sales. $50B. The current market value hovers around $10B, or one fifth of sales. Add in net debt ($2.7B in LT debt and capital lease obligations plus a $1.1B pension shortfall) and subtract cash ($1.4B), enterprise value goes up to about $12.5B. Is >...
