S&P Price: Fair Value Should be $30.60

Per the S&P: With our sales growth projection, and reasonably high industry plant utilization rates, we think chipmakers will benefit from more avorable operating leverage, leading to healthy earnings growth. We also think year over year growth comparisons will be aided by relatively weak results in 2007, when the industry faced excessive inventory levels and dramatic memory price deterioration. In the long term, as top-line growth is expected to slow, we see more tempered variability and cyclicality in margins, leading to more stable profits and less risks.

Sigma Better Designed for 2009

Just released Sigma Designs (SIGM) Q1 results (see conference call transcript) are probably the worst nightmare for a non-cyclical growth company to shrink both top and bottom lines. But is this the beginning of the end of SIGM or does this create an opportunity to own a piece of a great company on cheap? <> I think it is the latter. Their main business - IPTV and Blu-ray HD DVD - will remain sluggish for th remain of 2008, but may have an significant upswing in 2009, benefiting from the next generation IPTV 8654 media processor, which "provides a 50% improvement in performance along wit>...

The forces responsible for much of the volatility on the markets in
recent years are the giant hedge funds, which use short sales as a tool
on a daily basis far more often than classic share purchases as a short
or long-term investment. Last Friday saw the publication of the short
levels for mid-April, which provide something of an insight into the
hedge funds' moves as the first quarter results season goes into full
swing.<!--more--> <>Inchip giant Broadcom Corp. (BRCM), for example, short interestin the stock climbed by no less than 80% to 31 million shares, just asthe company was on the ve>...

Sigma "Massacre" - What To Do?

Today was another nightmare for the Sigma (SIGM) bulls (myself included). But amidst the fear, you must realize the fundamentals:<!--more--> <>After the 5M share buyback, 25,031,060 shares are outstanding. (3.8M
are confirmed completed at $21/share. The remaining 1.2M shares may
have been already bought, or will likely be bought at these much lower
prices).
Assuming all 5M shares are bought at $21, total net
assets minus liabilities is at $240.5M. $9.60 per share liquidation
value. Only $26M of those assets are inventories. This is not a
substantial inventory risk.<>At $15.50-$16.00 per share, >>...

Sigma Designs is the dominant chip player for IPTV. They are, in fact, the purest play on IPTV. Sigma has some 80 per cent of the Blu-ray chip market. They'll likely see revenue some in the emerging market for wireless HD -- the replacement of HDMI cables for HDTV. Sigma also makes chips for HDTV's and is building a base in the home entertainment media extender business.

Market moving, may swing up, if the market returns to the bull. Good time to buy those great stocks, which were hurt during the down turn. The rest of this week will show if there is strength to keep this going till the beginning of the year. Some great earning reports and projection will sustain an upward trend.

From the "gotta love it" department: In a report reiterating his "buy" and $34 stock target on Sigma Designs (sigm), saying that he "expects" a strong quarter and guidance, analyst Jeff Schreiner of American Technology Research tells investors how the stock should trade based on three different sets of guidance provided in April by management. He then cut his own revenue guidance for the quarter and year. As I wrote a few months back, Sigma remains "As strange as it gets."
