<> I am recommending the sell of the retailing sector. Why? The reason is simple, no one is buying anything right now. When was the last time you heard of a friend, neighbor, or colleague bought a new car? I tell you that it is obvious all over America (if not the world) put discretionary spending on perma hold a couple of weeks ago. You can rest assured that there isn't a retailer in America (even Walmart) that will have a great quarter. <> Ever since Bush went on prime time consequences..... the retail market has come to a screeching halt that is only slightly less frozen than the cr>>...

Initial Jobless Claims Down – Analyst Blog
|
|
|
Initial claims for unemployment insurance fell by 20,000 this week to 512,000. Last week's numbers were revised slightly higher, so arguably the drop was 18,000, but that's still a nice improvement.
The four-week moving average dropped by 3,000 to 523,750. Since new claims can be volatile from week to week, the four-week moving average is generally considered a better gauge of where we are. The graph below (from http://www.calculatedriskblog.com/) shows the history of that average. We are now 135,000 below the peak set back in April. This is a key piece of evidence that the recession is over...

Buy True Religion Before the Epiphany Wears Off
<><font>This article covers a growing trend I have noticed over the years. Now I typically don’t write about or analyze retail stocks. However, I just wanted to make a few general and lighthearted observations (see my Back Pocket Indicator below) about a particular brand which doesn’t get too much attention on the Street. When I was in college, I noticed True Religion brand jeans starting to take off. Growing trends are easy to spot on any campus across the country, especially if you have any relationship to someone of a younger generation. True Religion Apparel Inc. (TRLG) manufactur>...

Seven Ways to Profit with Retailers
With consumer spending sapped over the past year by a sinking economy, massive layoffs, and tanking home prices, investors have been concerned with the financial health of retail stores. At the start of the second quarter earnings report season, conventional wisdom believed that off-price retailers would fare well while luxury retailers would be hit as consumers focused on price and necessities. Second Quarter Report Card <>Most retailers have now reported their fiscal second quarter earnings. Much to the relief of investors, earnings have not been as bad as feared.<> Offsetting steep declines >>...

Update on Short Interest in the Retail Sector
North America retailers have reported a range of results over the past few DESLI U.S. Retailers weeks. The market did not have high expectations, so in many cases the results were not as bad as most investors had feared. <>There were some exceptions, with Sears (SHLD) announcing an unexpected loss, due to a pension related write down. Urban Outfitters (URBN), a possible casualty of any CIT (CIT) failure, has seen its short base decline rapidly, almost halving during August. Other large declines in short base are evident in JC Penney (JCP), American Eagle Outfitters (AEO) and Big Lots (BIG). Ho>...
