American Water Works (NYSE: AWK) closed at $19.13. AWK announces on August 11 a secondary offering of 30M shares of common stock by selling stockholder, a subsidiary of RWE AG. AWK options were active on August 13 with volume of 15,064 contracts trading according to Track Data.

St. Mary Land Exp (NYSE: SM) closed $28.75. SM options were active on August 13 on volume of 7,195 contracts. SM September and November option implied volatility of 51 is below its 26-week average of 64, according to Track Data, suggesting decreasing price movement.

NASDAQ OMX Group (NASDSQ-NDAQ) today introduced Top of PHLX Options (TOPO), a low latency options data feed that provides direct access to data from NASDAQ OMX PHLX(SM) (PHLX(R)). TOPO offers recipients the same information PHLX provides to the Options Price Reporting Authority (OPRA) for inclusion in the consolidated market feed, without extra transmission and processing latencies.

Many of the major energy players are busy searching the world for more oil and natural gas reserves. Barron's Dimitra Defotis thinks they should be looking closer to home, as U.S. shale fields hold enormous potential as a source of energy.

BP (BP) is already charting a course in this direction. In July, it made a deal to pay Chesapeake Energy (CHK) $1.75B for land in Oklahoma's Woodford Shale. Exxon Mobil (XOM) would do well to follow suit.

Rehan Rashid, Energy Analyst at FBR Capital Markets, highlighted the natural gas industry in Barron’s today and laid out his stock picks:
