SQM is a world player in the agricultural chemical industry but actually have a foot in myriad chemical applications. For example they manufacture iodine for medical and pharmaceutical applications. In addition POTASH corp of Canada own 30% of SQM after unsuccessfully trying to acquire them last year. It's hard to believe that SQM will be able to keep buyers at bay for much longer.

A Long Look at Lithium: Chile's SQM Poised for Growth
Sociedad Quimica y Minera (SQM), headquartered in Chile, looks poised for solid returns as global markets demand more lithium-ion battery energy and agricultural resources. SQM is a leading producer of key resources such as potassium nitrate, iodine and lithium carbonate. It also produces specialty plant nutrition products, iodine and lithium derivatives, and certain industrial chemicals, including industrial nitrates. SQM is well positioned as the world population adds 700 million new middle class people (examples, China 350 million and India 100 million respectively) by 2022. <>Of part>...

Expect Big Gains from Sociedad Qumica y Minera de Chile
Sociedad Qumica y Minera de Chile (SQM), has not been in the news of late, and so has been off of my radar. Having some spare time this weekend, I have been revisiting a few old friends and this stock has caught my eye for a couple of reasons. <> It's the fourth largest holding in the iShares MSCI Chile Index (ECH). That index has performed very well and looks to continue its steady upwards trace. <>At the end of April, SQM reported some surprising figures year on year (Q1 2009 v 2008): net revenue increase of 33% on 2008, with the NYSE traded ADRs providing earnings of $0.33 per s>>...

The Latest From The Yahd, Hahvard Yahd
I found this article from Bloomberg with news of the latest filing dated March 31, 2009 but no link to the actual 13f. Shockingly I was able to find it here and you can compare it to the previous filing from December 31, 2008 here.
The Bloomberg article notes that HMC increased its exposure to China, Brazil and Mexico. Mexico is odd as it seems as though Mexico has become unpopular due to declines in production from the Cantarell Field. From the March low iShares Mexico (EWW) is up about the same as iShares Emerging (EEM) but EWW was a drag for the first quarter.

Stocks to Watch if Crude Oil Heats Up
Historically, when we begin to enter the spring/summer months, the price of crude oil heats up. As crude starts to heat up, some chemical stocks immediately come to mind. Yes, chemical stocks, not your average oil stocks like Exxon (XOM), Chevron (CVX), Conoco (COP), BP (BP), and Sunoco (SUN), as these stocks track crude well, but don't explode like these chemical stocks have in the past when crude trades higher. <>The stocks that hit MY RADAR are: Sociedad Quimica y Minera (SQM), Terra Industries (TRA), Agrium (AGU), and Potash (POT). Looking at a chart of the United States Oil Fund (USO) ver>...

Some names I am looking at early this week
Monday
Fund holdings - Baidu.com (BIDU) and First National Financial (FNF). The former broke through the 200 day moving average Thursday but I cut it down to 1 share on super froth. The latter has been stagnat the past 8 days, with each day an intraday low hitting the 50 day moving average. Very strange. I cut back a bit to a 2.5% stake since I have double jeopardy in these guys with FNF and FAF. I expect good things but the stock action has been weak"ish" and this is the more expensive of the two - not that it matters because nowadays all secto...
