The Daily News Spends $150 Million On New Printing Presses

While other papers are downsizing in this economy, the New York Daily News has invested in new and improved color printing presses, the New York Times reports.

Owner Mort Zuckerman, a self-professed business contrarian, tells The Times he's commited to "long term"-- he see a future in print -- but understands why skeptics would question his decision to upgrade the News' presses, based in Jersey City.

    Shuttered Paper's Vets Shutter Online News Site Too

    The Rocky Mountain Independent, a news site launched by the reporters of the defunct Rocky Mountain News is dead after just three months of operation.

    The relatively slick looking site failed to catch on. It only had 200 subscribers and not enough traffic to interest advertisers says the AP.

    Maybe Now's Not A Great Time To Spend $95 Million On A New Printing Press

    The Naples News Media buildingThis August, E.W. Scripps (SSP) newspaper Naples Daily News will crank to life a new printing press and move into a new 186,000-square-foot office building. Total cost: $95 million.

    Plans for the new building and press were formulated five years ago. Given the current state of decay in the newspaper industry one might reasonably question whether it was such a good idea to carry through with them.

    If one does ask, however, and if one is an E.W. Scripps shareholder, one will probably get a helpless shrug from E.W. Scripps management.
