Symantec Corp has been one of the leaders in security software. Revenue growth has been very strong for several years. However, earnings declined in 2006 and have not yet recovered to the 2005 level of $0.74 per share.

The stock peaked at $34 in late 2004 and slid to $15 by mid-2006.

A few days ago our friends over at New Constructs released their Most Dangerous Stocks for June list and we couldn’t help but note that Symantec (SYMC) was added to the large cap list.

The stock has had a great short term rally since we published our research note on April 30th, highlighting the challenges the company is facing in their core market according to their customers. We recommended it as a short but on a fundamental versus a trading basis.

SAN FRANCISCO, Feb 2 (Reuters) - Symantec Corp. (SYMC.O: Quote, Profile , Research) sees its consulting division hitting $1 billion in revenue by 2010 as the company searches for growth beyond its core business of selling security software.

Greg Hughes, head of the company's consulting operations, said in an interview this week the business would grow over the next three years to make up 10 percent of Symantec's overall revenue. The division currently generates about $200 million, or about 5 percent of the company's revenue.

Check the anti-virus software that you're using right now.  It probably either Norton or McAfee.  Symantec took a beating... sounds like a buying opportunity to me.  Remember that everyone's been holding off on their PC purchases b/c of the Vista.  And for those who will be upgrading... you'll need a new copy of this anti-virus software.  Institutions and home.  It's a nice play on technology upgrade.
