Last night’s surprising news that Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) is buying 3Com (COMS) for $7.90 a share has sent far-reaching ripples through the networking equipment sector. The Street sees largely negative ramifications for other players in the industry, and they fall into three categories.

Teradata (TDC) this morning posted Q3 revenue of $425 million, down 3% from a year ago and a bit below the Street consensus estimate of $425.7 million. Non-GAAP profits of 38 cents a share, though, beat the Street at 29 cents. The data warehousing systems provider said sales were down 2% in the Americas, up 3% in EMEA and down 14% in Asia Pacific/Japan.

For all of 2009, the company repeated its previous forecast for revenue down 1%-3% in constant currency. The company, however, lifted its full year EPS forecast to a range of $1.34 to $1.38 a share, from $1.22 to $1.28.
