I've chosen to invest due to a number of factors:

1. High return on equity (compared to industry)

2. Low debt to equity ratio

3. PEG < 1

4. Relatively low institutional ownership

5. Increasing growth, partially due to AMD going fab-lite

6. Extremely efficient management (high inventory turnover and revenue per empoyee)

 

This is a long-term buy with low downside and a relatively greater upside.

Taiwan Semi Cuts Q4 Rev Guidance; Ominous For Semis

Taiwan Semiconductor (TSM) today said that its Q4 revenues will be below the guidance the company provided a month ago due to “a reduction of wafer shipments resulting from continuing weakness in global economic conditions.” The contract chip manufacturer now sees Q4 revenue fo between NT$63 billion and NT$65 billion, down from its previous forecast of NT$69 billion and NT$71 billion.

Taiwan Semi now sees Q4 gross margin of 30%-32%, and operating margin of 17%-19%, in each case dropping the range by four percentage points.

TSMC Sees ‘09 Chip Sales Off Mid-to-High Single Digits

Taiwan Semiconductor (TSM) CEO Rich Tsai expects chip industry sales to be flat this year, and to decline by mid-to-high single digits in 2009, he said on a post-earnings conference call yesterday.

A report by DigiTimes picked up his remarks, which they interpreted to mean a 5%-9% decline.

Tsai also said that Q4 chip industry revenues are likely to be down about 10%. He also said that “due to supply chain actions in reducing inventories very aggressively,” foundries will likely under-perform the overall semi industry in 2009.
