Mayor’s Picks - February 2008

Panic has been replaced by a continual confusion on Wall Street in the past month. Recession fears still persist and experts paint a conflicting view of whether the economy will fall into recession. This Mayor is in the recession camp but only for a short time. The real problem I see in the future is a stagnant housing market for the next few years. The run up in housing values have brought homes to a very un-affordable levels for most people. I see housing falling this year and being flat for possibly five years after that. This could be a drag on the economy for a while.

Hope everyone is enjoying the holiday. I've been sitting around reading the news and getting ready to tackle the coming weeks which will no doubt continue to see volatile trading. This market, not really sure where it wants to go, has been reacting violently both up and down to new data points. You can make a good profit playing off of these news releases if you know what to expect, though keep in mind the reactions can be very short lived. Here are some of the things we have to look forward to the next couple of weeks.

I had to do a double-take when I saw a Reuters story earlier today that said MBIA planned to urge lawmakers at a Congressional committee hearing Thursday to curtail “the unscrupulous and dangerous market manipulation of short-sellers.”

Memo to MBIA: Take a number and get in line. The bond insurer is the latest in a long list of companies that, over the years, have pleaded with the government to do something — anything — about those dastardly short-sellers who have dared raise red flags over their precious companies.
