With the recent commuter rail crash in Los Angeles, the FRA is looking at instituting Positive Train Control (PTC) on all commuter rails as soon as possible. Wabtec is currently the only company to have finished testing with the FRA and received approval for it's system. PTC is a failsafe device designed to stop trains if they run through red signals, etc. The Alaska RR is currently testing a similar system, but is having difficulty getting the setup to work properly. Combined with it's other products and services, Wabtec gives a nice little packet of diversity to shareholders.

This company has developed, tested and received approval for rail technology that the FRA is requiring be integrated into train control systems nationwide within the next 15 years. Several large RR companies have already installed the equipment into a portion of their trains, and are contracted to continue installations. One of the systems Wabtec has available is an emergency failsafe device for trains, which will significantly decrease collisions and increase safety. Westinghouse Air Brake Technologies make and sell for freight cars and locomotives. Railroad transportation is a lot cheaper than air freight or trucking when oil price is at or over 100$ per barrel.
