SunPower To Build Plant For Xcel; FBR Cuts Ests; Shrs Off

SunPower (SPWRA) this morning announced an agreement to build a 17 MW solar power plant in Alamosa, County, Colorado for Xcel Energy (XEL). SunPower said that when completed at the end of 2010, the plant will be “the second-largest high-efficiency solar PV power plant in North America.” The project is expected to create 200 jobs during the construction phase.

The deal is contingent on approval of the Colorado PUC and project financing.

U.S. electricity consumption unexpectedly dropped in Q2 and Q3, on a year-over-year basis, The Wall Street Journal reported Friday (subscription required), although The Journal cautioned that the data is early and incomplete.

Xcel Energy Cuts Subsidy For Residential Solar Systems

The battered solar sector has received some more alarming news, this time from the Minneapolis-based utility Xcel Energy (XEL). According to the Denver Post, the company on Friday cut the credit offered on a typical household photovoltaic system to $6,750 from $11,250.
