If you asked me the number one solar company to throw your money into, it would most definitely be YGE.  Their numbers are great:

  • Mkt. Cap of only 2B - tons and tons of room to grow in the energy sector!
  • Operating Margin of just under 20%
  • ROE is 13.6%, solid for companies in Solar Energy.
Obviously the major concern is their free cashflow.  Things have been tight lately due to the high cost of silicon for manufacturing.  But the technical and fundamental side of silicon itself says it's time for a bear run (Another position I'm interested to take u< />< />...

Based on earnings growth, even with a miss last quarter, this stock is being terribly undervalued.  Short-term I expect it to continue to sell-off to 17 or so, but then double in 4-5 months.  Future earnings will remain inconsistent, and I recommend straddling every earnings report as I expect YGE will be extremely volatile around earnings.  In the past week an analyst raised his price target to 30 from 25 and the stock still sold off... I'm a buyer.

But the cost of the program has become a political issue in Germany recently. Solar: China Feed-In-Tariff Could Be 2 Years Away

It could be two years or more before China adopts a national feed-in-tariff program, Hapoalim Securities analyst Gordon Johnson writes in a research note.

Solar: Analyst Sees Signs Of Demand Recovery

The clouds may be clearing for the solar sector.

Collins Stewart analyst Dan Ries writes this morning that “for the first time in nearly a year, channel checks point to a demand recovery in the solar market.” He says the recovery has been clear in Germany, the world’s largest solar market, accounting for an expected 36% of the global market in 2009. Ries adds that there has been improvement, as well, in Italy, France and the U.S. And he says that the new government in Japan is likely to “sharply increase” subsidies in that country starting in November.

Chinese Solar Stocks Slide After Big Shanghai Mkt Tumble

Shares of China-based solar stocks are down across the board today after the Shanghai stock market fell 6.7% overnight on fears that the country’s economic growth could slow due to a slowdown in lending growth. Acording to Bloomberg, former Morgan Stanley Asian economist Andy Xie said the China market could drop another 25%, on top of a 22% slide in August.
